Heads Up Play on Cake

October 12, 2010

I play a lot of online Heads Up sit and go tournaments and I have to say the players on the Cake Network have to be the most aggressive I've seen.

I like to think of myself as an aggressive player, but my play paled in comparison to the majority of players I've been facing lately. When I first started playing again at Cake Poker I will admit I was getting it handed to me. I like to think I am pretty good Heads Up, but I was only winning around 30-40% of the games.

It seemed my opponents would raise every hand, when I bet they re-raised, if I checked they would bet pot. Now this is a lot of what Heads Up is about, but I was getting very frustrated with it going on EVERY hand.

Well after about 100 games or so, I realized I was playing the same players over and over. Sure every once in awhile someone I didnt seem to recognize would show up, but I'd say 75% of my competition I played before.

LIGHTBULB! Being a smaller poker network, and heads up not as popular as other tournament types, why wasn't I using the notes feature?? Here I am playing the same people, but I cant remember how they play from previous days.

Moral of the story, yeah maybe you have to wait a minute or two for a game to start (unlike the huge sites where they go off right away) but being able to note players I know I'll face again has become priceless. Even a simple note like "aggressive - will re-raise but fold if go over the top" is invaluable. If you play less popular games, or higher stakes, smaller poker sites like the one's on the Cake Network can give you a huge advantage by using the notes feature. At the bigger sites its rare you will play the same person on a consistent basis. read more
